LILA PERLMAN (she/her) is a Seattle-bred, NYC-based playwright, actor and devised theatre maker. In 2020, her short play The Golem and the Maharal’s Wife was awarded second place nationally from the Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival. Lila is the 2024 and 2022 Playwright in Residence with Letter of Marque Theater. She is a founding member of the NYC-based Soft Brain Theatre Co., a modern-day Commedia Dell’Arte troupe, for whom she has written two original productions.
Lila’s work seeks to remind audiences that the harshness of life does not exclude its intense beauty. Core focuses of her work are the female presence in history, the crucial interrelationship between humans and the natural world, and the universal truths nestled in our mythologies. Lila is always invested in the power of fantasy to take us out of a world we’re familiar with so that we can look at our societies anew. She works to evoke in her audiences a renewed sense of awe of the world we’re in and those in it with us.
Lila is fascinated by the marriage of movement and language onstage, and is an avid student of clown and mime. She holds a BFA in Acting from Texas State University.
